The Eye of Ra Story

Chapter Three

"You have broken the law, no one is allowed to enter this tomb without authorization" his words began to falter, as he looked a Charlotte. She stood tall with a bright glow surrounding her, she had a face like thunder "Silence" she yelled, the voice echoed around the surrounding hills; and was spoken with so much authority that he took a few paces backwards.

Charlotte was clearly very angry, "how dare you, infidel, how dare you approach me in such a manner, know your place" as she said this a blue mist came from her mouth covering the man and freezing him to the spot, just like a statue. The men that had arrived at the camp with him dropped there weapons and began muttering to each other.

Charlotte turned towards John, to his horror he saw that the pupils of her eyes where bright red, and she was clenching her fists in anger, as the anger subsided she slowly unclenched her fists, and her eyes returned to their normal colour. John walked towards her, he felt no fear of her, but had seen yet another side of her new identity.

"What now" he said uncertainly, "John help me, I feel drained of energy but I must not let my enemies see that" "Ok, let's go over to that group of boulders away from prying eyes, but first you must tell the guards to surround these men until you have decided what you want to do with them." This she did and walked to the edge of the camp with John gently supporting her.

They sat down on some boulders with their backs to the camp, "Oh John that was dreadful thing to do, that poor man, all that anger where did it come from? It certainly was not from me." "I did not think for a moment that it was" he said, "that was a man's voice coming from you, Charlotte, I think you are in danger of being taken over, and somehow you are going to have to find an inner strength to fight this entity that is trying to control things."

"Yes I see your point" said Charlotte nodding her head, "but I do think that this entity does not wish to harm me, quite the opposite in fact, I feel it is here to help me." "Yes, I think you could be right, but at the same time, we cannot afford to draw so much attention to ourselves, at least until we have figured out why you have been brought here" said John.

Charlotte put her finger to her mouth to silence John, as they turned around a guard was approaching, "Excuse me Mistress, the priest that you had silenced has ... "Yes I now interrupted Charlotte; I'll come to talk to him in a minute" she said dismissively and the guard turned and walked back towards the camp. John smiled. "These new powers you have are certainly impressive," he said holding out his hand to her as he stood, and helping her up they walked back towards the camp.

The man started to bow again, and again, as Charlotte approached "I'm sorry we have got off on the wrong foot your majesty, please allow me to introduce myself my name is Sied chief priest of the temple here in Yunu," the man was clearly frightened and did not want to experience the wrath of Charlotte again. As she raised her hand to quieten him, he scuttled backwards and tripped over. "Get up she said impatiently, I wish you to tell me more about the area and its rulers, come and talk with us."

"Certainly Isis," he said scuttling along beside her, "Why do you call me Isis? We have not even been introduced, and you do not know my name", "I can see with my own eyes your majesty, you left us before but thanks to our beloved god RA, you have returned and now everything will be well again, you have been sent to save, and protect us just as before." Charlotte raised her arm and the man stopped talking and dropped back a few paces to walk behind them.

"Well, what do you think of that?" Charlotte said. "It seems your identity is the only certain thing about this venture," said John. After questioning the man Charlotte, and John, were able to determine recent events. They believed that Set, the God of evil, had risen sometime ago, and was bringing plague and pestilence to the area; most of the local people had left the area, and those that remained where dying

At any other time both John and Charlotte, would have treated this information as hearsay, or mass hysteria, and dismissed it, but having been through enough of their own experiences, they knew that it could be true. If this was the case, they surmised that they could be in danger if Set found out that they were in the vicinity. They gathered everyone around them and Charlotte spoke to them asking for allegiance against Set's reign of terror.

With one accord they all agreed to help, Charlotte was shrewd enough to realize that this was from fear of her, rather than devotion. She was aware that not everyone had good intentions towards her. She summoned Akunosh her chief of guards, and bid him to ensure that the guards where by her side always unless she ordered otherwise. They then settled down for the night, not that she or John got much sleep; they both got up in the early hours and sat around the campfire discussing the day's events; and what to do the following day.

They decided that in the morning they would head for Yunu. Although they where aware that a large group would attract attention, it was determined that they split into groups to enter the town, and then if possible meet up again. One thing that was agreed on was that Charlotte should be flanked by her guards always, John was to be in charge of one group, and Charlotte another; this was to ensure that if one group got into trouble, the other could help.

John was very apprehensive as he set off, whereas Charlotte seemed to be looking forward to any confrontation that may happen, then again she did have an invisible helper thought John. On entering the town, Charlotte found it almost deserted, apart from the children who came running out from behind doors and buildings. They ran to her and touching the hem of her robes, or touch her when they could dart between the guards, giggling, and laughing as they did so.

John's group approached from the other side of the town, and found themselves meeting in the middle. There was so much noise and laughter, coming from the children, he did not hear the horse's hooves initially, but Charlotte had. She quickly ordered the guards to take the children out of danger, then turned to face the horses. However, they where nowhere to be seen although they could be heard, a dust storm had sprung up hiding them from view.

Charlotte pursed her lips together blowing a strong wind from between them. First, she cleared a tunnel through the middle of the dust-storm area, this was where the sound of galloping hooves where coming from, then she turned her head from side to side, to clear completely the area of the dust storm.

The vision before them was incredulous, horse's hooves could be seen racing across the ground and then there was nothing, no horse's legs, body, or head, and no physical being, riding them, except for a pair of skeletal hands holding onto non-existent reigns, with a pair of glaring eyes suspended where a head would normally be. The men surrounding Charlotte turned, and run shouting, "Set is here."

Charlotte had gone into a trance; from out of nowhere, she produced a horn and blew into it. The sound coming out of the horn was an unearthly high pitch screech, and all on the same note. She did not even pause for breath; some people had to cover their ears. The riders and their horses started to appear in physical form. They did not stop forming, but continued to grow, growing excessively large until finally they exploded into thousands of pieces, and began melting away into the ground.

An unearthly voice came from above, it shouted angrily, "I will return Isis, you may have won this battle you will not the next." With that, Charlotte crumpled to a heap on the floor. John ran to her, she was unconscious and barely breathing. He lifted her up, and carried her over to one of the buildings, away from the sun's glare. John was beside himself with grief, he did not know what to do; he cradled her in his arms and planted a gentle kiss on her lips saying, "Don't leave me my love."

A sound like the crack of a whip resounded through the air, and John's body was sent into convulsions, he could not control them, although he could hear what was going on around him, and he could vaguely hear Charlotte calling his name, but when he tried to answer it, he could not. He heard another voice speaking which seemed to become from inside his head, this one said, "You must protect the queen, or you will be answerable to me"

The convulsions subsided; but they had left John feeling weak. He noticed Sied approaching Charlotte; and to his horror, he was holding a dagger in his hand. Charlotte was still unconscious, when John tried to get up; he was too weak to move. He opened his mouth to call her, as he did a sheet of flame came from his mouth, it shot across the ground targeting Sied, and covering him in flames, turning him into a human torch. "You have served us well." Ra's voice said in triumph...
