South Sea Hampshire
South Sea, in Hampshire started building its Millennium Promenade trail in 1995;
it covers two kilometers, hugging the shore of the coast. It passes alongside Old
Portsmouth, which has pubs in Spice Island, where press gangs once roamed, It does
not take too much of an imagination to transport yourself back to those times, the
area has such atmosphere.
South Sea has its own pier, and is the home of Calshot Castle; the castle was
paramount in the defences of the south coast, in the reign of Henry VIII. On a
clear day, you can see the 'Isle of Wight' across the Solent, with hovercraft
trips, running back and forth, every twenty minutes.
Nelson's HMS Victory is berthed in Portsmouth dockyard; with all its history, it
is not surprising that it has become very popular with tourists. For those who are
not interested in the past, a visit to 'Gun Wharf Quays' is ideal for a spot of
retail therapy. Restaurants look out over the Solent, while you can relax, and
watch the rippling water.
